The Girl's Program
provides one-to-one remedial tutoring in reading and math for up to 90 girls in grades 1 through 8 in Southwest Detroit. Tutors include working professionals, college students, and certified and retired teachers.
Girls receive assistance with reading and math skills, homework, computer literacy, creative expression, and appropriate social interaction. Those who join our tutoring sessions are often 2 or more years behind grade level in reading and/or math, live in single parent families, and have many household responsibilities.
M.E.P.
strives to provide a supportive environment that reinforces
effort and encourages success.
The
Rise N Shine Summer Enrichment Program
is co-sponsored by Mercy Education Project and Alternatives for Girls. The
program presents a rich myriad of opportunities for up to
50 girls each year. Academic tutoring in financial literacy, math, and reading is provided by certified teachers.
Volunteer professionals and staff teach classes in: dance, art, sculpture, drama,
mask making, gymnastics, sign language, gardening, creative
writing, ceramics, photography and more. Girls go on field trips and do a community service project. The program presents
an artistic and educational avenue to the girls, allowing them to explore
their creativity and broaden their perspectives.
