The Girls’ Program provides one-to-one remedial tutoring in reading and math for up to 90 girls in grades 1 through 8 in Southwest Detroit. Tutors include certified teachers, retired teachers, and trained volunteers.

Girls receive assistance with reading, math, homework, computer literacy, creative expression, and appropriate social interaction. Those who participate in tutoring sessions are often 2 or more years behind grade level in reading and/or math, live in single parent families, and have many family responsibilities.

MEP strives to provide a supportive environment that reinforces effort and encourages success.

The Emerging Leaders Summer Program offers 30 middle-school-age girls from southwest Detroit an early chance to explore college and career choices, develop leadership skills and benefit from academic enrichment.

The participants visit colleges and universities.  They will also visit and learn about careers in healthcare, women-owned businesses, green jobs and other employment options.  The program is held four days per week for four weeks at the University of Detroit Mercy.  There is no charge, and transportation is provided.  An overnight trip is held during the program.  See poems and stories written in the 2009 Emerging Leaders program.
