Harriet
Katusabe
I
am Harriet Katusabe, a 36 year old women from Rwanda. I am a mother
of five children, and a widow. I came to the United States to flee
problems in my country. Freedom House, a shelter for refugees, offered
to help me gain asylum in the United States. Freedom House also
came up with the idea of attending school to improve my English
and possibly get prepared for the G.E.D.
I could
not believe that I would ever sit in class again and understand
the material after such a long period of time away from school.
Sister Paula, the Educational Program Coordinator insisted that
she knew that I could do it! So I went on with her courage. She
took me to the Mercy Education Project where I spent eight months,
and successfully passed my G.E.D.
After
passing the G.E.D, Mercy Education Project and Freedom House worked
together to find a job training program for me. I was sent to the
Visiting Nurse Association for a nursing assistant class. I also
succeeded in passing the difficult course!
Freedom
House and Mercy Education Project have changed my life in a short
time. I am happy with what I have become, confident with myself
and thankful that these organizations have helped me reach my works.
I am now planning on joining nursing classes.
I encourage
other people in the same situation, like I was, to not lose hope.
It is never too late. God is able. My dreams are coming true. Thanks,
I appreciate you all.
